DESCRIPTION
Abandoned Gary, Indiana takes you on a photographic journey into the beautifully abandoned structures of a once-thriving Rust Belt city.

Author and photographer Miki Lansdowne captures the timeless essence of raw beauty hidden under the dust and decay of time. She exposes the strong steel bones that have forged the foundation of Gary, Indiana, and reassures there is a light shining bright for the rebirth of the forgotten city.

From the 1920s to the late 1960s, Gary was a booming city, with a superb school system, a well-known theater for the arts and astonishing architecture. Unfortunately, segregation and automation stripped the city’s walls and left Gary exposed to the elements that set the stage for decay and crime to take over.

Some consider Gary an eyesore—Miki Lansdowne hopes to alter that perception.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR(S)
Miki Lansdowne fell in love with history and abandoned buildings as a young child. The country roads of West Virginia ignited her passion for urban exploration and photography. She travels the country photographing abandoned places and setting up art shows to showcase her journeys. She is one of the founding members of the Decay Devils, a nonprofit organization and historic preservation group out of Gary, Indiana. Thus far, Miki has been featured on PBS Arts showcases across the globe and her interview with the network was nominated for a 2014 Emmy award. Miki was also honored by Raw Natural Born Artists in Sacramento California, as photographer of the year, and deemed one of South Magazine’s greatest photographers.
