”I truly enjoyed reading this book. I think (the author) did a great job. I’m sure he is rightly proud of his hard work. The name DeBardeleben is attached to so many early developments in the Birmingham District. However, less well known are the DeBardeleben coal companies, including Alabama Fuel & Iron Company (AF&ICo), founded by patriarch Henry F. DeBardeleben and carried forward over 45 years (1905 - 1950) by son Charles and grandson Prince.
The company flourished in St. Clair (and Shelby) Counties with the former development beginning and ending the company’s efforts. Unique as the largest commercial (non-captive) coal company, remarkably paternalistic towards its employees, and fiercely anti-union, AF&ICo’s St. Clair County story illustrates the trials of Alabama’s coal industry from both a business and social perspective. It is a worthwhile and readable account for anyone wishing to learn more about the Birmingham District from a new perspective.”
