DESCRIPTION

High in the Catskills, the crumbling remains of a busy spa resort fade into the mountainside. On an island in the middle of the Hudson River, the facade of a castle that exploded catches the eye of commuter rail passengers. Nestled in a protected valley, a residential home for disabled children is collapsing under a blanket of fallen leaves and snow. From the sleepy mountain regions to the bustling urban centers, New York State is full of fascinating abandoned places if you know where to look. These locations serve as physical reminders of the many booms and busts throughout the state’s intriguing history.

Donald Pimental captures the beauty in decay in his series of photographs of the Empire State’s forgotten sites. His photos reveal not just architectural remnants but also the emotional weight these overlooked spaces carry. Some sites have well-documented stories to tell, and others keep their secrets in dusty silence. Join him on his journey to explore sites where time has stood still as nature reclaims what humans have left behind, inviting readers to witness the quiet, haunting transformation of structures fading back into the landscapes that surround them

ABOUT THE AUTHOR(S)

Donald Pimental is a mental health therapist whose lifelong fascination with forgotten places fuels his work as a photographer and urban explorer. Introduced to abandoned buildings as a child, he rediscovered the hobby during the COVID-19 pandemic and set a personal goal of visiting abandoned sites in all fifty states as a way of confronting a long-held fear of flying. His photography highlights the quiet beauty found where nature and decay meet, revealing stories hidden in overlooked spaces. When not traveling or documenting ruins, Donald enjoys spending time with his wife, their dog, and two tortoiseshell cats.
