Small Wonder: A History of Small Point, Maine

Author(s): Tom Hinkle
$23.99
DESCRIPTION
Small Point is a village within the town of Phippsburg, near the site of the first European settlement of 1607. The setting is spectacular: three miles of Seawall Beach to the east, and Small Point Harbor and Hermit Island to the west.

It was the home of two of Maine’s governors, Bodwell and Sewall. Residents are a mix of old families going back to 1750 and members of the summer community, dating from 1880—two close-knit and very different communities.

The author spent summers there from birth and is now a year-round resident. He knew many of the people in this book. Tom Hinkle is a professional artist, and this book is illustrated with his Small Point scenes and with old photographs.

When not painting or writing, he restores historic houses. This book contains his thoughts about architecture, covering three centuries. It is his history as well as that of Small Point.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR(S)
Tom Hinkle graduated from Harvard with a degree in English and went on to teach English and theatre at Phillips Exeter Academy. Following his teaching career, Tom became a dealer in fine arts, which led to his becoming a professional artist. Tom has a long-time interest in historic preservation, having restored some two dozen historic houses, dating from 1699 to 1931. He produced a survey of historic buildings at Small Point, and has lectured on Small Point history. A former member of Greater Portland Landmarks, Tom is co-author of Living with Newer Old Houses, and Centennial History of the Small Point Club.
