DESCRIPTION

Situated atop rolling hills overlooking the historic James River, Hollywood Cemetery stands as one of America's most magnificent burial grounds and Richmond's crown jewel.

Established in 1847 as part of the rural cemetery movement, this 135-acre arboretum houses over 80,000 souls, including two U.S. Presidents, Confederate President Jefferson Davis, and countless notable figures who shaped American history.
Photographer Caine Rose has spent four decades documenting Hollywood's extraordinary artistic treasures. His lens captures the haunting beauty of marble masterpieces by renowned sculptors Santo Saccomanno and George J. Zolnay, the ethereal elegance of Louis Comfort Tiffany's incomparable stained-glass windows, and the profound symbolism embedded in centuries of funerary art.

Rose's unique perspective stems from deeply personal connections—he once lived within the cemetery's gates and now has family resting among its hallowed grounds. Through stunning photography and insightful commentary, he reveals how Victorian artisans transformed grief into enduring beauty, creating a visual symphony where angels weep in marble, crosses reach toward heaven, and every monument tells stories of love transcending death.

This remarkable collection invites readers to discover Hollywood Cemetery's hidden poetry carved in stone.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR(S)

Caine Rose developed his photographic vision under the mentorship of his father, a professional photographer and commercial artist. His nearly decade-long career as a photojournalist took him to over fifty countries, documenting warzones, natural disasters, and human rights abuses. Rose achieved rare distinction as one of the few Western journalists to interview Taliban fighters during the Global War on Terror in 2003.

In the early 1990s, he lived with his family in Hollywood Cemetery's historic Gatekeeper's House, deepening his four-decade relationship with this sacred landscape. Rose now lives on a small farm in southern Virginia, where he tends goats and gardens while pursuing his passion for cemetery photography, fulfilling his lifelong dream of authoring this definitive book on Hollywood Cemetery.
