However, less well known are the DeBardeleben coal companies, including Alabama Fuel & Iron Company (AF&ICo), founded by patriarch Henry F. DeBardeleben and carried forward over 45 years (1905 - 1950) by son Charles and grandson Prince.
The company flourished in St. Clair (and Shelby) Counties with the former development beginning and ending the company’s efforts. Unique as the largest commercial (non-captive) coal company, remarkably paternalistic towards its employees, and fiercely anti-union, AF&ICo’s St. Clair County story illustrates the trials of Alabama’s coal industry from both a business and social perspective.
