Plattsburgh Through Time

Author(s): Anastasia Pratt
Since it was first settled in the eighteenth century, Plattsburgh has offered a vibrant vision of both rural and urban life.

Residents created several industries and businesses, even while establishing theaters, museums, churches, and fraternal organizations. Their efforts produced businesses as diverse as the Lozier Automobile Factory and Lee Appliance, as Albert Brown Inc., a fuel delivery service, and the National Army Store.

These pages tour Plattsburgh's residential and commercial streets, witnessing the significant changes that have occurred over time. Local treasures, like the Plattsburgh Normal School and Clare and Carl's Restaurant, are pictured alongside municipal buildings, churches, and houses.

The changes caused by the closure of Plattsburgh Air Force Base in 1995 and the exodus of business from the city's downtown area to the town's commercial district on Route 3 are particularly noted, as are the evolution of the area's schools.

Anastasia L. Pratt is the Clinton County, New York historian and an assistant professor and the coordinator of the advanced certificate in public history at SUNY Empire State College. After graduating from Peru Central School, Pratt earned a BA in history from SUNY Plattsburgh and both an MA and PhD in American culture from the University of Michigan. She lives in Plattsburgh with her family.
